March 8

Chapter 31 pt.1

The Rule of Benedict March 8

It's not at all obvious how the role of a cellarer would function within our order since we share so few possessions in common.  I can imagine, however, a time when the BSBSB might have a member who feels called into this role, and we will have the joy of witnessing the Spirit shape a cellarer for our order just as we are now watching her give form to our own callings.

  1. I love the part in which Benedict writes that the cellarer should "regard all the utensils of the monastery and its whole property as if they were sacred vessels of the alter." At first glance, it might seem like Benedict is advising us to take material goods too seriously, but it is more that he expects competence and demonstration of respect. In properly executing our roles so that the order might function optimally, we also show that we can be trusted with "small things" (Luke 16:10).

  2. Well said, Ruth. It is in genuinely demonstrating faithfulness in the very little that we are prepared to be faithful in much.

  3. That and it makes me imagine a man polishing cutlery...
